Amma Sri Karunamayi
Revered as an embodiment of Divine Motherly Love, due to the unconditional love and affection that Amma showers liberally on people and all forms of life. “Amma” as she is affectionately called by her followers, means “mother”. Amma is renowned for the depth and breadth of Her spiritual knowledge and guidance that she gives freely and the humanitarian works that she has undertaken in multiple countries.
Even as young child, Amma’s divine nature could be seen in her unfailing compassion and her innate generosity. Amma was known for giving her own shawl, food, or her gentle touch and words of comfort for anyone approached her. As Amma matured into a young woman, Amma began spending more and more time in meditation, immersed for hours in states of divine consciousness. At the age of twenty, Amma left the comfort and security of her family’s home and traveled to the remote and sacred Penusila forest, in Andhra Pradesh, India. Amma spent ten years meditating and performing severe austerities for the benefit of the entire world.
During this time, Amma meditated in the forest without concern for her physical comfort or safety for days, weeks and months absorbed in meditation. Amma came to be regarded as the incarnation of the Divine Mother, the feminine aspect of God.
After emerging from this period of immersion in spiritual practices, Amma began her outward mission of providing spiritual and material aid to all in need. In the remote and impoverished region of Penusila, Amma initiated many humanitarian projects, including the Sri Karunamayi Free Hospital, Sri Karunamayi Free School, home for the elderly, and charitable food distribution. Amma also established an ashram there, Manidweepa which is known far and wide for its beauty and serenity.
Additionally, Amma devotes much of her time to traveling throughout the world to share her peace, love and wisdom with the universal family. Traditionally, it is the spiritual seeker who must travel with great difficulty to reach the feet of a divine being. However, Amma herself has taken the responsibility for coming to visit her beloved children during annual tours.
