Dear Amma's children,
Jai Karunamayi!

Shravan month starts Sunday July 27th. It is considered one of the holiest month in the Hindu calendar. Indeed every day of this month is considered auspicious. This month is especially significant for worshiping Lord Shiva.

At the Shirdi Saibaba Temple at SRIM center, recently consecrated by our beloved Amma, an 18" Banalinga (naturally formed Linga from the Narmada river) has been placed by Amma in the altar in front of Shirdi Baba.

Performing abhishekam (with milk and water) to Lord Shiva (in the form of Banalinga) is extremely auspicious in the Shravan month. Our resident priest Pandit Hari Kafley is keeping the temple open everyday from 5 PM to 7 PM especially for this purpose.

I would like to encourage all the devotees to visit the temple as often as possible in the Sharavan month (July 27th to August 25th). Somwar (Monday) is Lord Shiva's day, so if possible try to go to the temple every Monday during the Shravan month.

Please call Pandit Hari Kafley (404-453-4937) to get more details.

and/or contact us by phone at: 678-380-5477

You can also download a flyer of the program from

This event is for world peace...Amma has said, "The event is open to any and all Bhaktas of Lord Siva."

Therefore, kindly distribute the flyer either electronically and/or physically and invite friends and family to come and receive the Blessings of Lord Siva.

Amma has said that Vedic chanting is in the cosmos and predates ALL religions as we know them today.    Sri Rudram is part of Vedic chanting, and of course it is open to anyone who wants to learn and/or listen to these cosmic sounds.  Amma told us during the temple tour that the cosmic sound which is embodied in the Vedas is the manifestation of God's physical form.  The beauty of Vedic chanting is that you don't have to know the meaning of the words, it is the tone and rhythm that are important and which help guide us from darkness to light.

The energy emanating from the continuous chanting of Sri Rudram for 11 consecutive days and the healing powers of the holy smoke arising from the Homa Kundas are indescribable.  There will be also be daily morning abhishekam before starting the Homa.  The abhishekam milk will be distributed to all the devotees everyday.  Water from the holy Indian rivers will be brought and energized during the homa and will be made available to the devotees at the conclusion of the 11-day program.

Now some details on Sri Rudram in very simple terms .  Sri Rudram hymn is an invocation to Lord Siva.  Sri Rudram contains two parts, Namakam and Chamakam. Namakam sings the glory of Lord Siva and Chamakam is asking the lord to grant the devotee materialistic favors (the cosmos even teaches us "how to ask" and "what to ask"!!).  Each of Namakam and Chamakam consists of 11 chapters called "Anuvakams".

·         Routine chanting of Sri Rudram is called "Roopam" and consists of chanting the Namakam once followed by chanting the Chamakam once.

·         Eleven recitations of Namakam followed by one recitation of Chamakam is called "Ekadasa Rudram". This takes roughly 3 hours.

·         Eleven rounds of Ekadasa Rudram chanting constitutes a "Laghu Rudram".

·         Eleven rounds of Laghu Rudram chanting constitutes a "Maharudram", and

·         Eleven rounds of Maharudram chanting constitutes an "Atirudram".

If 11 people chant Ekadasa Rudram simultaneously that would result in completing a Laghu Rudram.  If 121 people chant Ekadasa Rudram simultaneously that would result in completing a Maharudram. Typically, a Maharudram is completed in 1 day resulting in the chanting of the Rudram 1331 (121x11)  times.  If a Maharudram is repeated for 11 days then we would have completed an Atirudram during which the Sri Rudram would have been chanted a total of 14,641 (121x121) times.

Simply chanting the Sri Rudram is called Rudra Parayanam.

Atirudra Maha Yagna consists of performing a fire ceremony (Homa) while chanting the Sri Rudram.  In the Atirudra Maha Yagna planned for next May (May 1-11, 2014), we will have 11 Homa Kundas (pits). Each Homa Kunda will have 11 priests and/or Vedic scholars (called ritviks) sitting around the Kunda and offering sacred holy items (collectively referred to as Samagri) and Ghee (clarified butter) into the Homa fire.  There will be a head Homa Kunda, where Amma will also be chanting the Sri Rudram and performing the Homa along with the head priest.  Simultaneously and in perfect unison the 121 ritviks will chant the Sri Rudram and perform the Homa.  Each ritvik will complete an Ekadasa Homa in one sitting lasting about 3 hours. Thus, at the end of the day, a Maharudra Homa would have been completed. Repeating this Maharudra Homa for 11 consecutive days results in the completion of the Atirudra Maha Yagna.

Atirudra Maha Yagna is rarely conducted outside India due to the logistical challenges associated with an event of this magnitude.  One can count on one's finger tips the number of times Atiruda Maha Yagna has been conducted in the U.S. ever... IT IS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF AN ATIRUDRA MAHA YAGNA!
